I've been reading Carolyn See's book, Making a Literary Life.  I've gathered two new goals from it.  1) I will start writing at least 1,000 words a day and 2) I'm going to be writing what she calls "Charming Notes" - at least one a day five days a week.

The second goal is the one I want to talk about here.  I don't know why, but it never really dawned on me to write my favorite literary folk.  Some might think that this goal constricts the writing process, but for me, I feel so liberated.  Here's why:  Now, all the things I think when reading a poem, a short story, or a novel by one of my favorite authors, I can say to the author.  If I especially love a piece, I can let them know.  I feel awesome when someone likes something I wrote.  I can make someone else feel awesome.  Also, it helps me to write when I know that everyone is only human.

I strongly suggest at least writing to your favorite author.  Thank them for writing that work that you love.  Tell them why you like it, what you like most, etc.  Tell them a little bit about yourself.

If you've written an author, or would like to write to an author, post your comments!
