Not too long ago, I finished a great book by
Elizabeth Moon called
Remnant Population. This book follows Ofelia, an elderly woman who has lived in a distant planet's colony for many years. When the corporation determines it is time to shut down the colony, she decides to hide and stay behind. She finds her true self. She also finds a life form never imagined possible. This book was difficult to put down. It also posed many ethical questions in my mind concerning the way anthropology works. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys science fiction.
Currently, I am reading
Kim Addonizio's My Dreams Out in the Street. This book follows Rita and Jimmy as they take a downward spiral into the world of drugs, homelessness, and loss of hope. The characters Jimmy and Rita are from a
collection of poems by the same name. The two are separated on the street, and the book follows them as they try to reunite. I am quite taken by the beautiful use of language in such a dark setting. This one is recommended if you love poetry and are interested in a dark yet gripping tale.
