Here is my poem I wrote inspired by the poetry prompt over at Poetic Asides.  The theme was "Returning."

Coming Home

Brown corrugated cardboard makes a fortress in my living room

Painted porcelain packed perfectly wrapped in tissue and bubble wrap

Computer completely placed in its own over-sized box

Files upon files upon files of poems for you

For him

For life

For peace

And short stories

And philosophy papers

Stack silently in the confines of a small shipping parcel

The Beanie Babies bumble about in their own area

Next to Legos and Hot Wheels and Nintendo games

Near them are the hidden stakes of books

Tomes of Nietzsche, Kant, Heidegger

All sitting next to one another in a philosophical debate that

Could never resolve

Schopenhauer stares at Peter Singer

And his concern for all things not human

Saying, “It would have been better had we not been born at all.”

Plastic dinosaurs reside with army men

Photographs of ex-lovers hide alongside their rivals

Makeup and its remover are tucked tidily into a suitcase

Movers pile pans and cookie sheets next to lamps and clothing

In the truck

The table, generally majestic in its all-wood cherry presence lies

Dismantled

Legs strewn about

Screws taped to the bottom

Behind all the chaos making its way onto the truck

Warmth wriggles up

Anticipation beats adrenaline

Soon when it’s all over

After the flight

You’ll await in your silver Tundra

Arms outstretched

Smile spread wide

Sigh

We’re coming home
