What I'm Working on - First of the Month Project Planning May 2009

It's the beginning of the month again, and for me, that means it's time to do some general housekeeping with respect to my Writing Research Editing projects.  At the beginning of each month, I consult my project list and update it.  This means taking off any client projects I have finished, updating next steps, and creating a schedule of when each item on my list will get done during the month.  My focus this month is on adding a few more client projects to my repertoire.

Peer Editing

Peer editing can be a helpful tool when you are short on time and your paper is due.  By pairing up with another student in your class, you can make your writing more powerful. There are a few rules to follow so that this system is as helpful as possible.

1.  Pair up with someone who will be honest with your work.
2.  Always be honest.
3.  Don't take criticism personally.  Remember it's better that it is your classmate telling you they don't understand the point of your essay than the professor....

Editing Checklist

Everybody makes mistakes.  That is why it is crucial to proofread your work before you turn in a final copy.  Below is an editing checklist to help make sure your writing is as close to perfection as possible.

  • Check your spelling.  Also, check for usage of words such as their, they're, and there. 
  • Check your grammar.
  • Double check the tense in the piece of writing.
  • Avoid Sexist Language.
  • Check subject-verb agreement.
  • Check for consistency.
  • Double-check all quotations and paraphrases for accuracy.
